SELF-CARE DURING PREGNANCY: WHAT IT IS AND WHY YOU NEED IT

Self-care might feel like an indulgence, but it’s really a crucial part of keeping you and your baby healthy. Just like flight attendants tell you to put on your oxygen mask before helping someone else, taking care of yourself means you’ll be better able to take care of the people who need you. Here are some ways you can practice self-care during pregnancy.

REST WHEN YOU NEED IT

It’s easier to manage stress and juggle work and family when you’re well-rested. Growing a person takes energy, and sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on your mind and body. But with pregnancy aches, squished bladders, and a racing mind, a good night’s sleep can sometimes be hard to come by.

A solid bedtime routine and limiting caffeine (a good idea during pregnancy anyway) can go a long way to helping protect your night-time rest. But if you can’t get a full seven to nine hours at night, try to carve out some time to rest during the day — even if it’s just a few minutes to sit back with your eyes closed in a quiet car.

EAT HEALTHY FOODS

You are the only source of nutrients for your growing baby. So eating healthy foods is just as much about nourishing your child as it is about taking care of yourself. Your baby needs certain vitamins and minerals, and so do you! Eating a good mix of fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish, and other healthy foods can go a long way to feeling your best.

EXERCISE

Exercising might be the last thing in the world you want to do right now — and that’s totally understandable. You probably feel big, your balance is off, and you’re exhausted.

With your limited free time, hitting the gym probably doesn’t land high on the list. But if you can motivate yourself to do it, physical activity during pregnancy (even 10 minutes at a time!) can actually boost your mood, improve your sleep, and give you more energy overall.

GET HELP

Whether you’re sick, feeling down, or having a hard time coping — ask for help. There are so many things you can do on your own, but there are a lot of things you shouldn’t have to.

If you’re experiencing depression or anxiety, or if you’re finding it really hard to quit smoking, there are people who can help you get through it. Talk to your doctor about what you’re experiencing and what resources might be available for you in Orange County.

TREAT YOURSELF

You are working hard to make sure everyone else is taken care of. You give so much; it’s OK to give yourself a little something, too. Get your hair done. Take a bubble bath. Buy a new dress that makes you feel strong and beautiful.

Remind yourself that your happiness matters. That you matter. Just like you would give a gift to someone you care about to encourage them and show them love, give yourself something extra — even if it’s time! You deserve it, girl.
